What is a boarding school for troubled teens? |

In many cases, parents send their child to boarding schools out of choice. Perhaps they themselves went to boarding school and believe it helped them in their academic, sporting and social life. Maybe it was the best route to gain entry to the college of their choice.
But some parents send their teen to a boarding school for a different reason. Here we’re talking about a boarding school for a troubled teen. Their child is facing problems and keeping the teen at home while going to their local school does not seem the way to overcome the problems. Placing their teen in a boarding school which works specifically with troubled teens seems the best idea.
But what makes a teen troubled?
There can be a number of causes and from those come a number of symptoms. Your teen may have low self-esteem, be down on confidence or they could have trouble concentrating on their studies and find they are struggling academically.
It could be they have health problems such as suffering from ADHD – Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. It might be they are mixing with the wrong crowd and the temptations or drugs and alcohol are on the horizon. They could be in danger of becoming sexually promiscuous.
Any and all of these situations give parents cause to worry and makes them look for a solution. This is where a boarding school can be the ideal answer for a troubled teen. To begin with, the ‘out of sight out of mind’ principle applies immediately. If you remove your teen from the environment where they were in trouble be it at school, home or in the community, you immediately diffuse the problem.
With motivated and highly qualified staff, having your teen on-site enables them to tackle their studies in a disciplined and beneficial way. There are often set periods of homework supervised after school hours. Working on the academic weaknesses of your teen is a much needed and added benefit.
There are important points to be made about teens who come into the category of being troubled. First they are not out of control or in danger of being arrested by the police. Second the public school system is not in a position to offer one-to-one tuition and give supervision to their students. Sending this type of troubled teen to a boot camp environment where discipline is military style and often quite dramatic is not relevant. What is needed for this type of troubled teen is provided ideally by a boarding school.
The costs of sending your teen to a boarding school are not excessive and many facilities offer loan or term payment plans. Your teen has the option of attending and will gain from the welcoming and encouraging staff. A boarding school for your troubled teen could be a year-long or longer experience. It is likely your teen will improve academically and mature taking self-confidence with them when it comes time to leave.
