NY Boarding Schools Information

Sending your child to a boarding school in NY is not cheap, but there are good reasons for considering it. Most boarding schools set themselves apart through excellent academic programs, world-class facilities set in beautiful locations, extracurricular programs, small classes and a culturally diverse student body. There are different kinds of boarding schools, each with different strengths. Here are a few NY boarding schools information for parents who are considering them for their children.

Traditional boarding schools:

1. The Gow School (South Wales, NY) - Teens who are finding it difficult to succeed in mainstream schools because of learning differences or disabilities can be accommodated in this all-boys boarding school. The school has a high success rate when it comes to helping students prepare for and pass standardized exams. The class size is quite small, even when compared with other traditional boarding schools. The student to teacher ratio is just 1:4, and the average class size is 4 students per class.

2. The Knox School (St. James, NY) - This is a coeducational college preparatory school for grades 7 to 12. They also offer sixth grade classes, but only for day students. They also have facilities and trained staff to support students with learning differences, although not specifically for students with ADHD/ADD. The teacher to student ratio is 1:6 and the average class size is 12. They have a very good sports program and a mentorship program to foster a positive relationship between students and teachers.

3. The Masters School (Dobbs Ferry, NY) - Founded in 1877, this non-denominational, coeducational college preparatory school accepts both day and boardng students (grades 9-12 for boarding students, grades 5-12 for day students). They have a very diverse student body where 30% is comprised of students of color and 13% of international students. The average class size is 14 and the teacher to student ratio is 1:6.

If your child has other needs, here are NY boarding schools information for alternative education:

1. Family Foundation School (Hancock, NY) - A coeducational therapeutic boarding school for grades 6 to 12. The program runs for a minimum of 18 months and provides therapy and counseling for students with different emotional or behavioral challenges such as substance abuse, ADD/ADHD, ODD, depression, anxiety, sexually acting out, truancy, and more. A rigorous academic program goes with therapy and counseling as well as programs for performing and visual arts, sports, and more.

2. Adirondack Leadership Expeditions (Saranac Lake, NY) - A short-term wilderness program for boys and girls aged 13 to 17. It aims to create a challenging and safe environment for teens who are challenged with low self-esteem, ADD/ADHD, mood disorders, ODD, trauma, technology addiction, and more. This short but intensive expedition-style programs help teens explore outside their emotional comfort zone and learn new skills which can be helpful for their personal development and well-being.

These schools are quite expensive, with some private NY boarding schools' tuition even amounting up to $40,000 and above. However, the benefits of sending your child to a school where they will help them learn instead of just expecting them to learn from instruction can be priceless. Children in boarding schools are also more likely to be happier at school because the small class sizes allow them to form a better relationship with their peers as well as their teachers.
