Junior Boarding Schools

Junior boarding schools refer to schools where children 13 years old and below are admitted. It's already a common kind of boarding school in the US, but it is neither common nor encouraged in other places such as UK. Boarding schools or prep schools for children aged 14 and above are more common, and are often referred to as prep schools.

Some people feel that sending their children to junior boarding school at a very young age could have more negative than positive effects. However, there are positive points to starting boarding school early. Here are a few of them:

  • Jump start academic learning - Accelerating the learning of children is one of the topmost priorities of junior boarding schools. You'll find that most junior boarding schools have strong programs in math, sciences, the arts, and more. If your child shows interest in academic excellence, or if it's something you want for your child, junior boarding schools would be a great place to start.
  • 24/7 supervision - Junior boarding schools employ staff with good credentials to provide supervision and guidance to students. This means that while your children are being encouraged to practice some degree of independence, they are doing it while guided by the supervision of qualified staff who are also in the school with them 24/7. In boarding schools, it's not unusual for situations to arise where counseling or mediation may be necessary at odd hours. Staff and employees in junior boarding schools are trained to accommodate these kinds of needs.
  • Peace of mind for parents - Being constantly on the look out for children can be impossible especially for parents with busy and demanding schedules. Parents who have children living in boarding schools can at least be certain that the staff is committed to the safety and well-being of the children in their care.
  • Development of social skills - Children learn how to socialize with other children at an early age. For children who live in junior boarding schools, learning how to socialize with other students is going to become part of their life. If your child is very shy and socially awkward, it would help to put him/her in an environment where socializing with other kids his/her age would be a big part of life.
  • Enriched extra curricular activities - It's always best to start cultivating interest in music, sports, and arts at a young age. Junior boarding schools have robust programs for extracurricular activities. There's always something productive to do and lesser unproductive distractions to fill children's time with.

These are only a few of the positive points of sending your child to junior boarding school. Of course a lot of adjustments need to be made by you and your child, especially if your child is not used to spending too much time away from home. However, the advantages certainly make it a worthwhile option to look into.

It would be best to visit a junior boarding school to have a first hand experience of what these places look like and whether your child would find the prospect of going there interesting.
