Individuals who were not able to earn a high school diploma may opt to take GED tests instead. GED (General Educational Development) tests are made up of five subjects. Passing a GED test means that an individual has high school level academic skills. In other words, it's the equivalent of a high school diploma. However, to be able to pass the GEDs, one must have a score that is higher than that of 60% of high school senior students nationwide. To ensure the fairness of testing methods, GEDs nationwide are administered by the American Council of Education (ACE).

To help prepare for the GED test, many states offer GED classes, most of which are free or require only a minimal fee to cover the exam fee.

Here are a few tips to follow on how to register for GED classes:

1. Contact the GED representative for your state - Each state has a GED office. To find their contact information, the best place to start is the website of the American Council of Education. A simple search on the website will bring you information on contact numbers of GED representatives in each state, and where GED classes are being held.

2. Get information from testing centers - You can also use the ACE website to look for information on GED Testing Centers and their contact numbers. You can call these testing centers to ask for information on how to register for GED classes.

3. Prepare your requirements - When registering for GED classes, fill out the registration forms and submit them together with your high school transcript (if applicable). For some states, you'll also need to take a few short tests to determine your level in the GED preparatory system.

You can also opt to study by yourself if you don't want to enroll in a GED class. Depending on your proficiency level and the study technique that you will use, it's still possible to pass the GED without registering for classes. To help you out with your own review, you can choose to buy GED preparatory tests in bookstores or taking an online GED class. You can also try attending group studies in your community, if there are other people taking the test.

Part of your success in taking any kind of exam, especially the GEDs is familiarizing yourself with the types of questions in the exam. Try to answer as many sample tests that you can get with the GED preparatory materials in order to be as confident as you can with answering the real exam. Practice is a very important part of preparing for the GEDs. By practicing to take the exams, you can have a better idea on how comfortable you are with the scope of the test questions. You can make an honest assessment on whether you need a tutor or if it would be better to join a GED class or not.
