How to Find the Perfect Boarding School |

|
A boarding school might be ideal for your child. This could be because they might operate better in an environment away from home, their parents might have to travel a great deal and thus make living at home a problem or the program at the school might be perfect for the student. But there are many boarding schools and finding the right one is vitally important.
So, as a parent, what should you look for when choosing a boarding school?
Co-ed or single sex is a major first choice. If you want your child to be free of the possible distractions of students of the opposite sex, then an all-girls or all-boys school is the one you will consider. It depends on matters such as culture and upbringing as to which type of school you choose.
The curriculum is obviously important. Some schools have a greater emphasis on academic progress towards college and university than others which may have a strong sporting program. Then again if the performing arts are important, you would consider a school which can foster any talent your child may have in this area.
Class sizes are important. A school with higher fees may be able to offer smaller class sizes. This in turn means more or better access to teachers. This may be important when seeking the perfect boarding school.
Faith is important to many people. If you want your child educated in a boarding school owned or operated by a particular religion then this will be an important factor in your choice.
Extra-curricular activities such as outdoor education, performing arts, track and field and information technology may be important for your child. A school which has much to offer in these areas may be the turning point when making your choice.
In loco parentis is Latin for ‘in the place of the parent’ and means that the school takes the place of the parent when the student is at school. So what services does the school provide? Is there a hospital close by and how easily can the child be contacted or contact their parents?
Reputation is important when choosing a boarding school. What do students and their parents who have been associated with the school have to say? Unbiased referrals are an important gauge when making a choice.
The cost of a boarding school involves not just tuition but also accommodation. Extra-curricula activities may also need to be paid for. If money is an issue, you will need to assess the charges and fees before making a decision.
Being away from home means you want your child to be safe and happy. Most schools offer a counseling service and you should investigate what structures are in place should your child need advice or simply someone responsible to talk to.
Finally there is the issue of individuality. You do not want your child to be a number, a cog in the big wheel of an educational institution. What does the school offer in terms of allowing each student to find their own niche, of enabling everyone to be themselves and to make their mark in life?
All these matters are worthy of your consideration as you seek the perfect boarding school for you and your child.
