How Do Boarding Schools Help Change Teens? E-mail

A boarding school for a teenager could be the turning point in their life. There are multiple benefits for a teen at a boarding school. Of course some parents object to the idea of sending their child away from home. You should understand though that unless a court orders a teen to attend a boarding school, there is no compulsion.

So how do teens benefit by attending a boarding school?

Discipline is the first and probably most significant aspect. Teenagers are young adults and, as parents, we want them to take more responsibility. We want to give them their independence but we want them to be careful and considerate of themselves and others. All schools offer discipline to their students but day schools see the students head home and that’s where the discipline from the school ceases. Not so in a boarding school. Here the students are under the watchful eye of staff 24 hours a day. And boarding schools have routines with eating, bathing, studying, etc. Students need to adhere to the timetable in all aspects of life and this is where discipline plays such an all-encompassing role.

Class sizes are always important and more so as teens grow through their pre-college years. Boarding schools often boast of the small numbers of students they cater for in many classes. This means your teen gets more attention and a better opportunity to learn and be tutored.

Quality of teaching staff is another relevant aspect. Boarding schools depend on attracting students in order to survive and a good reputation is essential. Boarding schools seek and find highly-qualified staff who are prepared to work with students outside of normal school hours. It takes a special type of teacher who can relate to and guide their students during and beyond the normal school hours.

Compulsory homework is a given in a boarding school for teens. No matter how keen a parent is to help, they are often rushed off their feet at work or attending to the household chores. In a boarding school, students are required to attend a supervised private study session most weekdays. This is a huge benefit having a member of staff on hand to assist and ensure the students are furthering their education.

Social behavior is important to a teen growing into adulthood. How should they respect their peers? How should they mix with the opposite sex? Boarding schools have detailed and clear rules about student behavior with high expectations that all students will abide by the rules. You may not be able to watch your teen if they go out to a party or elsewhere but in a boarding school, your teen’s behavior is the business of the school and the highest standards are demanded.

You will know that boarding schools are not free unless a scholarship or some other arrangement has been made. But the benefits of a boarding school are many and often can set the teen up for life.
