Common Myths About Boarding Schools E-mail

So you are considering sending your child to a boarding school. You are wondering if it is the right thing to do. If you went to a boarding school you are thinking about your experiences all those years ago. If you didn’t attend a boarding school you are perhaps thinking of those books or movies set in boarding schools.

Well before you make a decision, do yourself a favor and forget or dismiss the many myths about boarding schools which have existed for generations.

They are very expensive. This is simply not true. Of course ‘expensive’ is a relative term but today about 30% of students in boarding schools receive some sort of financial aid. The schools themselves make things easier by offering scholarships, loan programs and financial aid packages. Certainly fees are higher than in a state day school but to say a boarding school is the choice of only wealthy families has no basis in fact.

They are boring and super strict. This too is a myth. There is fierce competition for students at many boarding schools and word of mouth reviews are important. That is why boarding schools offer a wide range of subjects and especially so with extra-curricula programs. There is plenty to engage the students and fun and excitement is often part of the package. Outdoor education exploits, sporting and artistic activities put enjoyment in the forefront of the students’ education.

A boarding school has only one nationality of student. Another myth and this is a claim which is easily demonstrated to be false. In fact schools offer places to students from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds allowing the students to learn simply by mixing with their fellow students.

Boarding schools are believed by some to be an alternative to juvenile prison. This is in part true because some boarding schools offer a therapy program for troubled teens. But seriously damaged children are more likely to attend an intensive residential center. Besides many boarding schools focus on college preparation hence their high academic standing and choice of subjects. So if you are worried your child will be involved with a wild bunch of delinquents, please be assured such a claim is a myth and as such completely untrue.

Some parents are not inclined to consider a boarding school because they feel it will break up the family bonds. This is not the true nature of a boarding school. Students return home several times a year and for lengthy periods in the summer. It is simple to keep in touch with your child at a boarding school by phone, letter and email. Personal visits are encouraged and you can see your child on campus as much as they can return home to be with you.

Whatever your reason for thinking a boarding school is not right for your child, please do not use the matters raised in this article. They are all myths and as such are not true or relevant. Boarding schools have much to offer and their many good points need to be considered in making your choice.
