Boys Military Schools

There are many preconceived notions about military schools. Just the mention of these schools bring up a mental image of an immaculately clean campus with young boys rigorously trained to be like automatons with perfect manners. Many parents who dream that their children will be respectful of authority figures, disciplined and academically successful think that the solution is to enroll them in military schools.

In reality, boys' military schools aren't applicable as solutions to behavioral and attitude issues that parents are encountering with their teens. In fact, military schools tend to accept students who show a drive for excellence and potential to develop leadership skills.

Why should you think of enrolling your child to boys military schools? Here are a few advantages:

  • Excellent Academic Program - Good military schools for young men have a strong academic program which prepares them for good colleges in the future. Although going to a military school doesn't necessarily mean a ticket to a military university, many students who come from military schools are very well discipline and have developed good study habits to earn them admission to good colleges and universities.
  • Structure - Military schools make it a point to create a structure where students will learn the value of discipline and study habits. Many students find it easier to focus on their studies when there are allotted study hours monitored by proctors in halls where they can study with other students. The atmosphere created is more conducive to learning.
  • Small Class Sizes - Like most private boarding schools, boys' military schools also typically have smaller class sizes than mainstream schools. This is very important in terms of making sure that your child is not overlooked in any way. Even the most quiet child will find it hard to slip through the class if there are only 15 students or less in a class. If a student is having a hard time coping with the academic load, teachers will immediately notice this and can take proactive steps towards helping the student. It's also easier for students to form a bond with other students and teachers if the class size is small.
  • Leadership Opportunities - Military schools have a lot of leadership opportunities to help students develop leadership skills. Like other private boarding schools, there are also many after school programs that are in place in order develop well-rounded young men. There are facilities for different kinds of sports as well as music and arts programs. There are also drills and exercises patterned after military traditions for those who are interested in getting into military universities after high school.

There are a lot of positive things that your child can gain from enrolling in a military school. However, the waiting list is usually long and the admission process is also quite stringent. If you plan to send your child to military school, it's better to start the process early.
