Boarding Schools in the United States

As of 2009, there are already over 300 boarding schools in the United States. There are different kinds of boarding schools; there are prep schools, coed schools, single sex schools, and more. There are alternative boarding schools and therapeutic boarding schools which have programs that are specifically for students with special needs.

Here are a few general facts about boarding schools in the United States. If you're thinking of putting your child in one, it would be useful to get acquainted with these general facts beforehand:

1. Some schools are purely residential, some are not - You'll find some boarding schools where most of the students are residential and some students live off campus. However, most of the boarding schools you'll find will have 100% of their students living on campus.

2. Boarding schools choose their own curricula - Each state in the US will have a required minimum curriculum content. All schools within these states will have to either meet or exceed these curriculum requirements. An overwhelming number of boarding schools exceed those requirements and structure academic programs that are designed to give maximum academic advantage to the students. This is why boarding schools are often seen as an advantage.

3. Most boarding schools have well-qualified teachers and good facilities - Before enrolling in a boarding school, it's usually best to check out the faculty profile. In most boarding schools, you'll find that they hire teachers and other academic staff who have advanced degrees. Most boarding schools also take pride in the fact that they have world-class facilities which are for the advantage of their students. Most schools will even have equestrian programs, setting it apart from other day schools.

4. Most boarding schools offer financial aid - While it's true that boarding schools are very expensive, most of them offer financial aid for parents. There are also scholarship programs which your child may qualify for. If you are enrolling more than one child in a boarding school, most will offer tuition discounts for siblings.

5. Boarding schools are supervised 24/7 - Since students live together 24/7, it also makes sense that they should be supervised by responsible adults. Thus, there are staff that make it their business to know where the children are. Of course, children will still get into trouble once in a while, but there are school staff available at any time of the day to address issues.

6. Boarding schools in the US offer cultural diversity - Many international students prefer boarding schools over day school in order to be able to learn the language better. US boarding schools welcome international students and offer an environment that's conducive to learning the culture. Children also benefit from the cultural diversity that boarding schools have to offer. It enriches their experience and helps them adjust to different kinds of people.

There are many misconceptions associated with going to boarding school, and it's understandable that parents may feel apprehensive at first about having their child living far away from them. However, taking a closer look at what boarding schools can give your child may just show you that the benefits outweigh the possible challenges.
