Sending your child to boarding school can be a great decision. Some people think that the only thing good about going to a boarding school is the kind of connection and relationships you can build through it. There are many other advantages involved in sending your child to boarding school, and there are different kinds of boarding schools that can answer some teens' needs which cannot be met in mainstream schools.
There are several boarding schools in California where you can send your child, and finding the right one actually depends on whether your child has other needs aside from what's being offered in a traditional boarding school, or other interests that can be better served outside of mainstream schools. Here are just a few examples of Boarding schools in CA:
- Eagle Hill School - Founded in 1967, this coeducational college preparatory school for students grades 8 to 12 which specializes in helping young students who are struggling with dyslexia or other languaged based disorders. They also help students who have ADD/ADHD and learning differences. Students who have these kinds of struggles often don't perform well in public schools because of the limited resources as well as class size. The focus of classes in mainstream schools is not to adapt to the learning style of students, especially if not all of them are similarly challenged. Eagle Hill is one of the few boarding schools in CA which specializes in helping students with these kinds of learning disabilities. The average class size is five per class and the average teacher to student ratio is 1:5. Because of the specialization of the school, you can also expect the tuition to be quite steep. Currently it's at an average of $59,839.
- St. Catherine's Academy - An all-boys' school for students grades 4 to 8 also provides support for ADD/ADHD students. St. Catherine's Academy is a religious boarding school (Catholic) which also some elements of traditional military school to help boys build a strong foundation of faith along with an honor code and a desire to pursue excellence. The average class size of St. Catherine's is 15 per class, and the teacher to student ratio is 1:10.
- The Athenian School - A traditional coeducational boardng school for students grades 9 to 12 (also offers day classes for grades 6-12). Like many traditional boarding schools in CA, it has a strong sports program, with around 68% of their faculty members olding advanced degrees. It doesn't offer specialized support for students with ADHD/ADD or learning disabilities and differences, but it does offer ESL courses for international students which make up 10% of its student body.
- Santa Catalina School - An independent Catholic college preparatory school for young women with a focus on visual arts programs. Teaching styles are patterned after general learning styles of girls and classes are kept small in order to give students individualized attention. The teacher to student ratio is 1:7 and the typical class size is 12.
- Monte Vista Christian School - A non-denominational Christian college preparatory school for boys and girls established in 1926. Its focuses on the empowerment of young minds and the development of optimism in a faith-based environment. They offer a good sports program including an equestrian program in their 106-acre campus. The average class size is 18 and the teacher to student ratio is 1:13.
