Alternative Schools in Washington State

When traditional or mainstream schools fail to give children the help that they need, parents turn to alternative education. Parents these days are more open to the idea that not all children are suited to mainstream schooling. There are many different kinds of alternative education available for students who are considered at-risk or are simply not thriving in traditional schools. In the state of Washington, there are several that you can look into. Here's a short list to get you started:

1. Gray Wolf Ranch - This is a residential treatment center for males aged 14 to 25 which also offers day school program. Like many alternative schools, Gray Wolf Ranch only admits a small number of students at a time. They admit 26 students, and the length of stay is short-term, between 4 to 6 months. This alternative school caters to young men who are struggling with substance abuse, and focuses on the recovery through a community platform. Each resident that will be admitted has to have stayed clean for at least 30 consecutive days and has to have an attitude that wants a complete change in lifestyle.

2. Odyssey Wilderness Programs - A coeducational wilderness program for boys and girls aged 13 to 17. Each group or class is made up of only 8 students and the length of stay is typically from 4 to 8 weeks. This short-term wilderness therapy program helps students gain an improved sense of self-responsibility, an improved school performance, and the ability to make better judgments through their various activities as well as individual and group therapy sessions. The students being accepted in this wilderness program are typically young men and women who have problems with depression, defiant attitude, anxiety, anger issues, ADD/ADHD, experimentation with substances, and the likes. The program is probably not a good fit for teens with violent tendencies or have severe substance abuse issues.

3. Tamarack Center - A coeducational treatment center that admits students aged 12 to 17. This small residential treatment center focuses on a highly individualized and focused care of students that are substance-dependent or have other behavioral issues. Students are helped to deal with these issues while earning academic credits and are also helped to eventually reintegrate back into their families and communities.

4. Anacortes Home Educational Program - A Parent Partnership Program that essentially helps parents home school their children. The program admits up to 90 enrollees at a time and is a member of the Washington Association for Learning Alternatives.

5. Choice Parent Partnership - Another Parent Partnership Programs that is a member of the WALA (Washington Association for Learning Alternatives) that helps parents make home schooling an effective and beneficial experience for their children.

As you can see, different alternative schools in Washington State respond to different needs. Putting a child in one institution doesn't automatically guarantee that he/she will be helped by it. Aside from making sure the school has the facilities and staff to help your child achieve academic success as well as personal wellness and growth, parental involvement is also of key importance.
