Alternative School - Alternative Education Advice

When their children are not doing well in traditional schools, some parents are quick to think that something must be wrong with their children. Thankfully, these days there are a lot of alternative schools that opens up the possibility that sometimes, traditional schools are not the right fit for some children. At least not at a certain point in their life yet. Some children need to be taken out of a traditional school and placed in another kind of environment with a different kind of teaching style taught by people who have a different kind of training.

There are many different kinds of alternative schools and they all serve different purposes. If your child is not doing well in a traditional school, maybe one of these would be suitable for his/her needs:

1. Residential Schools - These may be state-funded or privately owned institutions where children are either placed there by courts, or sent by their families. Residential schools provide therapy and counseling along with educational programs. This is particularly helpful for at-risk teens, teens who are acting out and rebelling or are starting down the right path, those with ADD/ADHD, those battling with depression and substance abuse, and the likes. If your child needs therapy and at the same time wants to earn academic credit, residential schools are the best option for him/her.

2. School within a school - This is an alternative school within a traditional school which offers a different academic and/or social behavior program for children who need to be in a separate location. Not all traditional schools have this kind of program, but it could be useful for children who have difficulties learning with other children in mainstream classrooms.

3. Magnet school - Sort of like a "theme" school which specializes on a certain area in the curriculum. For example, schools for performing arts have a complete curriculum, but focuses mainly on the performing arts. Children who show special interest in performing arts would probably thrive most in this kind of environment where they can find individuals who have the same interests as they do.

4. Home schooling - An alternative education option where parents opt to follow a home schooling program. There are many reasons why parents would want to home school their children, like if their children are being bullied, or if they want to closely monitor their child's religious upbringing, or if there's a certain home situation that makes going to school difficult if not impossible for the child (like a sudden disability or health problem, etc).

Most alternative education options offer benefits like small classes, a relatively higher success rate at controlling truancy and promoting behavioral improvements. However, the best alternative education advice is to find out what your child needs and to make a proactive effort to find a school that can answer that need. Supplementing that with the kind of support only the family can provide will come a long way as well.
