| Description: | Sandy Spring Friends School is a coeducational college preparatory boarding school which also accepts day students. The SSFS is located on a 140-acre campus in the historic Quaker community of Sandy Spring at Montgomery County, Maryland. The school offers a strong academics program as well as excellent art and atheletic departments. It also offers 10 Advanced Placement courses. The school puts an emphasis on traditional Quaker values as the basic foundation of their philosophy. The school admits 571 students yearly, 23% of which are boarding students. It's a nurturing community where meeting with each other to worship being considered as the heart and soul of the school. Sandy Spring Friends School stays true in their efforts of providing Quaker education, which is a unique mix of academic excellence and spiritual depth. The school also puts an emphasis on the value of serving through various community service initiatives. These community service tasks are considered to be an integral part in the Quaker education. It teaches students compassion and at the same time, helps them become aware of some real issues in the world. All SSFS Upper school student is required to contribute at least 100 hours of combined community service in the school and outside. They are required to create a portfolio of learning experiences that they get from community service. They are also required to perform at least 30 hours of stewardship or school campus service. During stewardship service, students can participate in recycling efforts or help in school activities. Students can also participate in several sports offerings for both girls and boys such as cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball, track and field, lacrosse, baseball, and more. The school is accredited by NAIS, AIMS, TABS, AISGW, SSATB, FCE, ERB, NACAC, PCACAC, The College Board, Black Student Fund, and the Friends Schools of Maryland and District of Columbia. |
