| Description: | Washington Academy is an independent high school in Maine for both boarding and day students. They provide support for students with ADHD as well as students with mild, language-based learning disabilities and learning differences. The campus is located on 65 acres of land along Cutler Road, East Machias, Maine. The school provides a good college preparatory-based curriculum as well as college counseling in order to help students take the next step after high school. Over 85% of their graduates go to postgraduate programs, colleges, and universities. The school designed its courses to be more challenging than usual in order to encourage students to do better and explore their best potential. The selection of courses is extensive and varies widely so that students can explore different interests. Students are encouraged to develop a love for learning and to hone their proficiency especially in the subjects that interest them. Students can go on tours to the colleges or universities of their choice and are given the opportunity to intern or job shadow with someone in the field that interests them. The school also provides different summer programs, including a four week long ESL course for students who want to learn more about English as a second language. It's very helpful especially for students whose first language isn't English. The school has a very diverse population, with 18% of it made up of international students. The school only enrolls 411 students every year, and only 20% of that number are accommodated as boarding students. Some students are allowed to stay with a host family outside the campus. Boarding students of Washington Academy enjoy a warm, closely-knit residential life. The small-town setting is very tranquil and conducive not just for studying but making lifelong friendships. Students are encouraged to participate in various community service initiatives as a way of shaping young people to become contributing members of society. The location of the school also gives students ample opportunity to explore Maine's rural coast and engage in a lot of healthy physical activities. |
