Alaska, also nicknamed "The Last Frontier", is a state located in the northwest extremity of North America. Alaska has Canada to its east, the Arctic Ocean to the north and and the Pacific Ocean to its west and south regions. Historically, Alaska was purchased by the government from Russia in 1867. It is the largest state in the country and also one of the top 5 least populous states. It's capital city is Juneau.
Alaska's most populous region is South Central. Its largest but most uninhabited region is the Interior region. About 65% of the land in Alaska is owned by the US federal government. Most of these are national forests, parks, and wildlife refuges. Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is the world's largest wildlife refuge and is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
Alaska's Gross State Product (GSP) is ranked 15th in the nation since 2007. Over 80% of the state's revenue comes from petroleum extraction. The state's major exports are petroleum products as well as seafood, especially salmon and crab. The biggest employers in the state are the local and federal governments of the US, mainly for the extraction and transportation of petroleum and other natural resources. Other sources of revenue come from industrial outputs like natural gas, coal, zinc and a small part from agricultural output like tiber, wood, dairy products, vegetables, and others. Hunting is also important to the local economy. Many residents hunt for their own subsistence and visitors to the state also often go there to hunt moose, sheep, caribou, and other indigenous animals.
There are several colleges and universities in Alaska. Some examples include University of Alaska, Alaska Pacific University, and others. The public school education in Alaska is overseen by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development. Alaska has a state-funded boarding school in Sitka named Mt. Edgecumbe High School. The state also provides partial funding for other private boarding schools. Some examples of Alaska boarding schools for high school students include the Galena Interior Learning Academy, which is a traditional college preparatory boarding school and Alaska Military Youth Academy which is a military boarding school catering specifically for troubled teens and at-risk youth in Alaska.
